Walker To Run For BDEA
Dr. Thomas G. "Gerry" Walker of Birmingham has announced that he will be a candidate for the Board of Dental Examiners of Alabama. Dr. Walker was born into a military family stationed in Japan in the 1950s. He attended elementary school in Dothan, high school in Montgomery, and college at the University of Alabama. After graduating from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1982, he began his practice in Birmingham and is now located in Trussville. He has been in practice for 31 years. He also taught as an instructor in the Operative Department at the SOD from 1983-1993. Dr. Walker is currently the Vice President/President-Elect of the Birmingham District Dental Society. In addition to his practice, he holds a part time position at Julia Tutwiler Correctional Facility treating the dental needs of female inmates. He is an active member of the ADA, ALDA, AGD, AAID and the Class of 1982 Steering Committee for the SOD. He has served on numerous ALDA committees including a Special Committee that helped to unify the profession toward a goal of new direction and awareness for the Dental Board, and the Special Committee that authored the ALDA White Paper on Access to Care for our state. He has served on two ALDA Reference Committees and has served twice as Annual Session Exhibits Chair. He is a member of the ALDA Council on Membership and has served on the Committee for Pro Bono care. Dr. Walker serves as Chairman of a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that oversees $40M of care for developmentally disabled individuals in Wisconsin. He regularly volunteers at Cahaba Valley Health Care treating the dental needs of the underserved population. Dr. Walker is married with two children and a granddaughter. He holds a private pilot's license, is a golf junkie, and a member of Tide Pride. Dr. Walker states, "I believe the Board of Dental Examiners at this time needs to refocus on being more transparent and accountable in their operations. I was a charter member of the PDA, along with Senator Paul Bussman, which initiated positive and beneficial changes within the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners. Having attended BDEA meetings regularly over the past eight years, I have recently seen a need for the Board to redirect themselves to the defined tasks of protecting the public, and being more informative to the dentists of the State. The dentists of this State elect them to this trusted and responsible position, and deserve to be more informed and involved in profession altering mandates. ALDA and the dentists of the State define the path of our profession, and the Board of Examiners' responsibility is to solely protect the public. In the recent past there has been a change of direction for our profession that lends itself to a need for a rank and file dentist to represent the wishes of the practicing dentists on the Board of Examiners. With my experience in dentistry, and my knowledge of the operations of the Board of Dental Examiners and ALDA, I believe I can help refocus the Board to their responsibilities of protecting the public and allow the rank and file dentists of this state to define our future path." Ballots for the Board election will be mailed to all licensed dentists along with their license renewal information in late August. Alabama is one of only four states where the dental profession elects dental board members. The others are North and South Carolina and Oklahoma. Board members serve five-year terms. Other Board members include: Bobby Wells (Birmingham); Steve Stricklin (Alabaster); Sam Citrano, Jr. (Huntsville); Tom Willis (Decatur); Bill Chesser (Ozark); Howard Gamble (Sheffield) and dental hygiene member Kay Alexander (Rainbow City).
