Dr. Celin Arce: Dr. Celin Arce is a board certified prosthodontist. He received his dental degree from University Latina of Costa Rica, he completed residency in Advanced Prosthodontics at University of Alabama at Birmingham and Master of Science in Clinical Dentistry. He’s Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. He is currently Assistant Professor of the Restorative Sciences Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry
Dr. Michael D. Edwards: Dr. Edwards is a native of Birmingham,Alabama and moved to Randolph County in 1979 to practice comprehensive dentistry. He attended college at Birmingham Southern College and the University of Alabama in Birmingham earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Sciences and Mathmatics. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. Dr. Edwards received additional training in the United States Public Health Service and has earned his Fellowship and Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Edwards is married to Terri and has and four children and four wonderful grand children. The Edwards enjoy outdoor activities, sports and spending time as a family. Dr. Edwards has been an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry since 1995 in the Department of Hospital Dentistry and Comprehensive Care Dentistry. Dr. Edwards is very active in the profession having served in all the offices of his Alabama district dental society and the Alabama Academy of General Dentistry, including president in 1995. Dr Edwards recently served as president of the Alabama Dental Association(2013).
Dr. Edwards served as past chairman of the ADA anesthesia committee and served on the ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure. Dr Edwards lectures nationally on the subject of sedation and anxiety reduction in dentistry. He has received numerous awards in dentistry including being inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society, Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Society, Fellowship in the The American College of Dentists. Dr Edwards was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from UAB School of Dentistry.
In October of 2011, Dr Edwards was awarded Fellowship in the International College of Dentist and servrd as an alternate delegate to the American Dental Association. Dr. Edwards has postgraduate training in dental procedures such as dental implants, cosmetic dentistry,and restorative dentistry, only to mention a few. He is dedicated to continuing education and teaching to bring his family of patients the very latest advances in the profession.
Dr. Ken Tilashalski: Dr. Ken Tilashalski (“Dr. T”) is quite unique in that he has earned specialty certi cates in both oral and maxillofacial pathology and endodontics. After receiving his D.M.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Tilashalski completed both of his residencies along with an American Cancer Society fellowship at the University of Alabama. He is the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the University of Alabama at Bir- mingham School of Dentistry, and also holds an appointment at the School of Medicine. Dr. T maintains an active practice, treating both endodontic and oral pathology patients, and he is an avid researcher.
Dr. T lectures extensively nationally and internationally in the areas of oral pathology, oral medicine, and endodontics. Through his command of the material, he has gained a reputation as a superb speaker as he is able to weave humor through a common sense approach to education. He has been honored as a recipi- ent of UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Mark E. Wilson MD Dr. Mark Wilson serves as the Health Officer for Jefferson County, Alabama, and as CEO of the Jefferson County Department of Health. In this role, he oversees a $55 million budget with the mission to prevent disease, assure access to quality health care, promote a healthy lifestyle and healthy environment, and protect people against public health threats. To achieve this mission, Dr. Wilson oversees health department programs in air quality control, restaurant, school and other facility inspections, and six clinics serving over 200,000 patients each year. As a Board of Health member, Dr. Wilson has supported the many activities of the Health Action Partnership, a coalition of local agencies committed to improving health and quality of life in Jefferson County. Dr. Wilson’s service to our community extends over his 20 year career as a physician and Chief of Staff at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, a clinical teacher for UAB Medicine students and residents, and a member of both the Jefferson County Medical Society Board and the Jefferson County Board of Health. He has also served on other local boards and has been involved with national organizations that focus on the poor and underserved, and on ensuring availability of quality health care for everyone. Dr. Wilson received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech and his medical degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Dr. Wilson and his wife, Marian, have four children.
Dr. Mark L. Cannon is a native of the mid-west, born and raised in Nebraska. He received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Nebraska, and then attended Northwestern University for his Masters of Pediatric Dentistry. He completed his residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital and received his Diplomate status by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
After completing his hospital residency and obtaining his Masters in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Cannon was asked to stay as a Faculty member of Northwestern University Dental School. He has kept up his teaching and is now a Professor of the Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology- Division of Dentistry and is the Research Coordinator for the Pediatric Dental Program at the Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Cannon has been very involved in research for many years, developing many new products and techniques for dentistry and obtaining patents.
He is a past president of the Illinois Society of Dentistry for Children, and a member of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition to maintaining a large private practice in the suburbs of Chicago, he has lectured at many national and international meetings, often as the keynote speaker. He has presented to a large number of state and local dental societies. Dr. Cannon is a guest lecturer at Sao Paulista State University, UNESP, in Aracatuba, Brazil, and at the University of Illinois, Chicago, Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
Mia L. Geisinger DDS, MS is an Assistant Professor and Predoctoral Periodontal Program Director in the Department of Periodontology at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. She received a BS in Biology from Duke University, her DDS degree from Columbia Univeristy School of Dental Medicine, and her Certificate in Periodontology and Master of Science degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Geisinger is a Diplomate in the American Board of Periodontology. Prior to joining the faculty at UAB, Dr. Geisinger was in Private Practice limited to Periodontics in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. She serves as the Chair of the Periodontal Predoctoral Directors Organization and the Secretary/Treasurer of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. Dr. Geisinger lectures nationally and internationally on topics including periodontology and systemic disease, implant dentistry, and periodontal surgical techniques.
Dr. Tony Morlandt - The UAB Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery welcomes Anthony Morlandt, MD, DDS as Assistant Professor. Dr. Morlandt brings specialized expertise as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is fellowship-trained in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery. Dr. Morlandt received his MD from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and subsequently completed an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency with UAB Hospital. Prior to this he completed his DDS magna cum laude at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, Texas. In 2013 Dr. Morlandt completed a fellowship in head and neck oncology and microsurgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Morlandt specializes in head and neck surgical oncology, head and neck microvascular surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is an Associate Scientist in the Cancer Chemoprevention Program with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has authored several peer-reviewed scientifi c articles and textbook chapters on head and neck ablative and reconstructive surgery. Michael Reddy, DMD, DMSC - Dr. Reddy is a graduate of Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he earned his DMD degree, Certificate of Periodontology and Doctorate of Medical Sciences Degree in Oral Biology. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He is the Assistant Dean for Planning and Clinical Activity at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. He is actively involved in teaching the placement of implants at the graduate residency level, and has lectured extensively on this topic. His areas of research also focus on implantology. Dr. Reddy's clinical interests include bone grafting, implant placement, and esthetics of implants.
Dr. John O. Burgess - is the Assistant Dean for Clinical Research and the Director of The Biomaterials Graduate Program at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry and completed graduate training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. After completing a General Practice Residency and a General Dentistry Residency in the Air Force, he served as military consultant to the Surgeon General in General Dentistry. He was Chairman of Dental Research and Dental Materials at Wilford Hall Medical Center before retiring from the USAF. Dr. Burgess is a diplomat of the Federal Services Board in General Dentistry and the American Board of General Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials and the American College of Dentists, as well as an elected member of The American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and The American Restorative Academy. He is a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, The American and International Associations for Dental Research, the Alabama Dental Association and the ADA. Currently he is a member of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. A dedicated researcher he has served as the principal investigator on industrial, foundation, state and national grants. Dr. Burgess reviews for four dental journals, is the author of over 300 journal articles, textbook chapters and abstracts and has presented more than 800 continuing education programs nationally and internationally. Dr. Burgess is an active investigator on clinical trials evaluating posterior composites, adhesives, fluoride releasing materials, impression materials and class 5 restorations. He maintains a part-time practice in general dentistry. He has been happily married to Patricia for more than 30 years.
Dr. David M. Sarver - Dr. David Sarver received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1973 from Auburn University. He then graduated from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1977 and was named by ODK as the Outstanding Professional Student in the Medical Center. He obtained his post-doctoral master's degree and completed his certification in orthodontics at the University of North Carolina in 1979. He then opened his practice in Birmingham in 1979.
Dr. Sarver is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the Angle Society of Orthodontists and currently serves as an adjunct professor at both the University of North Carolina and University of Alabama at Birmingham. In addition to his commitment to his private practice, Dr. Sarver has been very active in research and academic writing. He has authored the orthodontic text, "Esthetic Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery" and co-authored "Contemporary Treatment of Dentofacial Deformity". Additionally, Dr. Sarver is a co-author of the text "Contemporary Orthodontics", the most widely used orthodontic text in the world. He has had the honor of being named to deliver all three of the prestigious Salzmann, Mershon, and Angle lectures at The Annual Meeting of the American Association of Orthodontics. Dr. Sarver's work was featured on the Today Show in a segment by Dr. Christine Dumas and Katie Couric. Dr. Sarver's award-winning research was also highlighted on The View in a segment with medical reporter, Dr. Christine Dumas. Most recently, Dr. Sarver was named the 2010 Distinguished Citizen of the Year by Leadership Vestavia Hills. He and his wife, Valerie, have three children - Dave, Leigh and Suzanne.
Dr. John M. Coke
Dr. Coke received undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado–Boulder in 1969 and then graduated with a DDS from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago in 1973. Immediately following, he completed a one-year General Practice Residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. After two years as a Naval Dental Officer in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, he completed a two-year certificate program in Oral Medicine and Oral Diagnosis from the University of Illinois–Chicago. Dr. Coke has been involved with GPR hospital-based in programs in Chicago, IL, Denver, CO and Gainesville, FL. Currently, Dr. Coke is Professor and Program Director for the AEGD and GPR post-graduate general dentistry programs at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Dentistry. He is board certified by The American Board of Oral Medicine, Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry and Fellow of the American Association of Hospital Dentists. Dr. Coke has been active with the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation serving as a Site Evaluator since 1984. He currently is on the Postgraduate General Dentistry Review Committee. Dr. Coke also serves on the Board of Directors Alabama Academy of General Dentistry. He has given over one hundred CE presentations nationally on common sense pharmacology, medical risk management, infection control and adult minimal sedation for the general dentist. He is the author and co-author of twenty-eight refereed publications. In March of 2012 Dr. Coke was awarded the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of seven faculty in the UAB system.
Pamela J. Sims, Pharm.D., Ph.D.
Pamela Sims, Professor of Pharmacokinetics in the Department of Pharmaceutical, Social and Administrative Sciences at Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy (SUM.S.OP) earned her B.S. Pharmacy from the University of Florida, her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Mercer University and her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU). Prior to Samford, she served on the faculty of Idaho State University (ISU). She has received teaching awards at CU, ISU, and SU and in 1994 received the John H. Buchanan Award, SU's highest university-wide honor for teaching excellence.
Sims holds a faculty appointment in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry Department of Pediatrics. She provides courses in Pharmacology to the Post-doctoral Dental Residents and lectures to Dental students and resident. Sims coordinates and teaches in the course in Pharmacology and Therapeutics for the UAB School of Nursing to graduate students pursuing Masters or CRNP training. Sims also coordinates and teaches in pharmacology courses for the CRNP and Nurse Anesthesia students at Samford University. Additionally, Sims has provided lectures in the UAB graduate program in Pharmacology, the School of Optometry and School of Medicine post-graduate training programs in Pediatrics. Sims has served as Pharmacy Unit Director for the UAB Center for Aging, Geriatric Education Center. Sims directed a clinical pharmacokinetic service at The Children's Hospital of Alabama from 1991 through 1993 and continues to conduct research in pediatric pharmacokinetics.
Thomas G. Walker, DMD
Dr. Walker was born into a Military family stationed in Japan in the 1950’s. He attended elementary school in Dothan, Alabama, high school in Montgomery, Alabama, and college at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He is a 1982 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. He began his practice in Birmingham, is now located in Trussville, and has been in practice for 31 years. Dr. Walker also taught as an instructor in the Operative Department at UASOD from 1983 – 1993. He is currently the Treasurer of the Birmingham District Dental Society. In addition to his practice, he holds a part time position at Julia Tutwiler Correctional Facility treating the dental need of female inmates. Dr. Walker is a charter member of the PDA, which initiated positive and beneficial changes within the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners. He is an active member of ALDA and has served on numerous ALDA committees including Special Committees #1 and #2. Special Committee #1 helped to unify the profession toward a goal of new direction and awareness for our Dental Board, and Special Committee #2 authored the ALDA White Paper on Midlevel Providers for our state.

Peter D. Waite, M.P.H., D.D.S., M.D.
Peter D. Waite, M.P.H., D.D.S., M.D., is Professor and McCallum Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and Divisional Chief in the School of Medicine, Department of Surgery. He received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1979. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1983. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1985 and remained to become Residency Program Director in 1988. He became Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1994. He was awarded the McCallum Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2001.
Dr. Waite is Board certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He is a surgical consultant to the UAB Sleep Disorders Clinic, Cleft Palate Clinic and Craniofacial Clinic. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Dental Association, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, American Association of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, and American Sleep Disorders Association. He currently serves as past-president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. In addition, Dr. Waite enjoys a busy broad scope clinical practice (TMJ, trauma, orthognathic, implants, dentoalveolar, cosmetics and airway disorders). He is an active committee member for the AAOMS, ABOMS, AACS and local university committees
